WordPress 3.6 – 6 New Features are Coming

The most recent WordPress release, 3.5, has passed the 6 million download mark.It was just a few months ago when WordPress 3.5 was released (December 11, 2012 to be exact).It brought us a renewed media experience and various improvements in the dashboard. Right now, WordPress 3.6, is already underway.

WordPress 3.6 is expected to be released in late April 2013. You’ll be happy to hear that this release will be a great update particularly for bloggers and content publishers. It is focused on post edit area, providing better tools and support to improve the editorial process of creating content with WordPress.

Here are 6 great improvements in WordPress 3.6.

1- Twenty Thirteen

WordPress 3.6 will also come with Twenty Thirteen, the new default WordPress theme. Twenty Thirteen will have great following Features:

  • support for post formats
  • Unlike previous WordPress default themes
  • using lots of bold colors
  • use different background color for each post
  • fully responsive and will look equally great on different screen sizes, resolutions, and devices

2- Post Formats

WordPress has support for Post Formats and custom post formats from version 3.1 ago, However, the old interface was not very noticeable. In WordPress 3.6, there will be a new user interface for post formats. Users will be able to choose and switch between post formats, and the edit area will change based on the post format.

In Image you saw how post formats appear in WordPress 3.6, There are 10 post formats in total. Some are obvious. Some are not. the list as like following :

Standard Post, Image Post, Gallery Post, Link Post, Video Post, Audio Post, Chat Post (“Copy a chat or Q&A transcript into the editor.”), Status Post (“Use the editor to compose a status update. What’s new?”), Quote Post, Aside Post (“An aside is a quick thought or side topic. Use the editor to compose one.”)

3- Post Revisions

Post Revisions have long been a part of WordPress but they were visually hard to navigate. WordPress 3.6 will now reflect the changes between different versions. Changes will be highlighted with colors and visual elements, It also adds a slider across the top of the screen to allow you easily navigate between revisions.

4- Autosaving

The auto-save feature will see some great improvements in WordPress 3.6. There are talks about saving unsaved changes in browser’s local storage and then synced to the server when there’s a connection, This will be very helpful.

5- Post Locking

The new version will have an editorial control feature, called post lock. This will allow website administrators and authors to lock a post so that other users can not work on the same post until it is unlocked. this will be helpful for blogs with multiple authors.

6- WordPress Menu

In this version wordpress menu will have some changes that helpful the beginners and make wordpress menu editor easier to create and manage Menus in WordPress. It will also get a new and more intuitive user interface.
